Take Control of Your Fertility Journey With Confidence

Choosing the right fertility clinic is one of the most important—and sometimes overwhelming—decisions you'll make on your journey. We've been there, and we get it. It can feel like there are a million questions to ask, a thousand decisions to make, and a whole lot of emotions along the way.

Walking into consultations prepared—with a clear understanding of the fertility process, your symptoms, medical history, and diagnosis—helps you take charge and make the most of every conversation. This isn't about just finding any clinic; it's about finding the one that will walk this journey with you and care about your outcome as much as you do.

The truth is, not every clinic or doctor is created equal. It's important to research your options (success rates, pricing, reviews) and find a clinic and care provider that will address your unique needs and make you feel confident.

Steps to Prep for Fertility Clinic Interview / Consultation

Level Up Your Understanding of Reproductive Health and Fertility

It might feel like this is something the clinic should do for you, and in an ideal world, they would—but trust us, you'll need to advocate for yourself. Starting with a solid foundation of knowledge not only gives you confidence but also sets the tone for your relationship with the clinic. You'll find it incredibly useful as you navigate the process and advocate for the care you deserve.

Gather and Organize Your Health History

This might feel daunting, but it's so worth it. Here's a personal example:

My first clinic didn't have access to records from when I was 23. If they had, they would have seen an endometrioma on a report, which is essentially a diagnosis of endometriosis. That diagnosis could have saved me eight years and multiple failed cycles - who knows. A personalized approach to your fertility plan based on root cause diagnosis is so important. The lesson? Get those records and understand them (or get help from Carly to do). Even if you think they're not important, they might hold the key to answers.

Assess Your Own Reproductive Health

Whether it's your egg reserve, sperm quality, uterine health, or something else, take time to understand what's happening in your body. Pay attention to symptoms, patterns, and what you're noticing. The more you understand, the more tailored your questions will be, and the more productive those consultations can become.

The person most knowledgeable about what's going on with you is you, and the right doctor will take the time to hear you, understand what you're noticing and appreciate that you are playing an active role in your care and decision making. You'll feel better too.

Ask the Tough Questions

It can feel intimidating, but don't hold back. You're investing your time, money, and hope into this process, and you deserve clear answers. Take the time you need, and don't hesitate to dig deeper if something doesn't sit right with you. The good doctors will welcome this, and respect it.

Questions to Ask

The below is pulled together from personal experience, the journeys of others we've connected with, and advice from experts in the field (our Head of Concierge Carly, our Medical Advisory Board, and others). These are the questions we wish we had known to ask from the beginning.

Note: If you're similar to me and want to know the way behind asking these questions + what you may be hoping to hear coming out of it. I would totally recommend booking an appointment with Carly to walk through it all OR recording the call and reviewing it with her after.

Clinic and Doctor Experience, Expertise and Credentials

  • What are the qualifications and board certifications of the doctors at your clinic? (You ideally want a double board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility specialist.)
  • Is this clinic solely physician-owned?
  • How many procedures (e.g., IVF cycles, egg retrievals) do you personally perform annually?
  • Do you have experience treating patients with my specific diagnosis or circumstances (e.g., PCOS, endometriosis, advanced maternal age, male-factor infertility, autoimmune conditions, etc.)? If so, how many cases?
  • Are there areas of specialization within your clinic (e.g., egg freezing, genetic testing, male fertility)?
  • Do you perform all procedures here, or will I need to travel to other locations?
  • What are your hours of operation for treatment?
  • Are you open for cycle monitoring and procedures at this location on the weekends?

Approach to Patient Care

  • Is everything completely personalized to my situation? If so, how?
  • What is your onboarding process? (You want a clinic that takes the time to truly understand your diagnosis before diving into treatment.)
  • Will I have a single doctor managing my care, or will I see different doctors throughout treatment? Does my doctor also do my procedures?
  • How involved are you in my day-to-day care and decision-making?
  • If I have a question or concern, how can I reach you? Can I email or call you directly, or do I need to book an appointment?
  • How do you stay updated on advancements in fertility care and technology?
  • What is your treatment philosophy (e.g., aggressive treatments vs. conservative approaches, willingness to try new protocols)?
  • How do you ensure patients feel supported and understood throughout the process?
  • Do you collaborate with other specialists (e.g., endocrinologists, naturopaths, or therapists) as part of my care team?
  • Do you provide a price list that outlines the cost of all testing, procedures, and extra cost? Will you review costs with me when discussing treatment options and consider my budget when helping me plan treatments?

Experience with Complex Cases

  • What is your experience with high-risk or complex cases, such as recurrent miscarriage, secondary infertility, chronic illness and fertility, reproductive immunology?
  • What types of advance testing and treatment options to they offer (Ex: microbiome testing, genetic testing, advanced sperm testing, Matris ultrasound, PRP, immune protocols)
  • Do you offer third party reproduction if needed?
  • How often do you recommend advanced treatments like genetic testing or donor options? What factors influence these recommendations?
  • Have you helped patients who experienced multiple failed cycles at other clinics?

Success Rates and Outcomes

  • What are your personal success rates, and how do they compare to the clinic's overall statistics?
  • What is your approach to optimizing success rates while minimizing risks, such as OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome) or multiple pregnancies?
  • Can you share examples or case studies of successful treatments for patients in similar circumstances to mine?

Communication and Transparency

  • How much time will I have with the doctor during appointments?
  • How do you involve patients in decision-making and explain the risks and benefits of each option?
  • Do you have an app or portal where I have access to all of my information as I go?
  • What forms of communication does your clinic use (email, messaging system, app or just phone) and what is your policy for responding to communication in regard to time frames especially during treatment cycles?
  • Am I able to email you or call you directly? What happens if there is an emergency and I need a doctor?
  • Do you have an after hours nurse that can help if there are any issues during treatment?
  • How do you handle patients seeking second opinions or needing more time to decide on treatment?

Reputation and Research

  • Are you involved in any research, publications, or clinical trials? If so, how does that influence your approach to patient care?
  • Do other fertility specialists or clinics refer patients to you for second opinions or advanced treatments?
  • Have you received any awards or recognition in the field of reproductive endocrinology?

At the Clinic Consultations

From my experience—both as a patient and someone familiar with the healthcare system—there's often an unspoken power dynamic between patients and doctors. It's easy to feel intimidated or hesitant to speak up, but remember: you are not just a patient; you are a customer. You deserve to feel empowered, respected, and confident in your care.

Here are some affirmations to help neutralize that power dynamic and remind yourself of your worth:

  • "I deserve the best possible care."
  • "I am the customer."
  • "I am paying a lot of money to get help."
  • "I deserve the best and most personalized care."
  • "I don't want to be treated like a number."
  • "I want a doctor who listens to me and values my knowledge, opinion and decisions in this process."
  • "I want to feel well taken care of."
  • "I am in the driver's seat—I have options."

Practical Tips for Your Consultations

Record Your Appointments

There's so much information to take in during consultations, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed. You have every right to record your appointments—whether they're in-person or virtual. Listening back later can help you process details, catch anything you missed, and better plan your next steps.

Follow Up with Questions

It's completely normal to leave an appointment and realize you forgot to ask something important. Don't hesitate to send follow-up questions. Good clinics will welcome the chance to clarify and provide additional information.

You Deserve the Best Care

"This journey can be challenging, but never forget your worth. You deserve a clinic and a care team that prioritize your needs, listen to your concerns, and genuinely want to help you succeed. You are investing not just your money, but your time, energy, and hope—and you have every right to demand exceptional care." Cheryl Dowling, The IVF Warrior and myStoria team member
