Seattle-based startup Trellis Health has launched the first FDA-cleared, at-home lab test for postpartum care, a move to arm new mothers with clinical data in a period notoriously overlooked by the healthcare system. The company wants to replace late-night symptom searches with concrete biomarkers, giving women actionable information before their standard six-week checkup.

A dangerous silence: The test targets a well-documented crisis in American maternal care. The postpartum period is especially dangerous, accounting for more than half of all maternal deaths—a majority of which could be avoided. After giving birth, a third of women are left with lasting health problems, from thyroid dysfunction and nutrient deficiencies to heart issues, often with little medical oversight.

Data in a box: For about $250, the test screens for over 30 key biomarkers covering hormones, inflammation, and cardiovascular health. Trellis says the blood collection process takes less than 30 minutes, with results delivered to the user’s app before their six-week doctor visit, providing a baseline for a more informed conversation.

The bigger picture: Trellis was founded in 2022 by former Illumina manager Estelle Giraud and CTO Ryan Nabat. The company announced $1.8 million in pre-seed funding earlier this year, positioning its app and new test as the first steps toward building an operating system for women's health. "Trellis Health is stepping in at this breaking point, offering an integrated platform that unifies medical history, provides continuous care, and delivers the proactive health management solution that modern consumers, especially women, desperately need,” said Rana Taghdisi Argenio, Founding Partner at investor Palette Ventures.

Why it matters: By putting clinical data directly into women's hands, Trellis is part of a broader push to shift maternal care from a reactive to a proactive model, giving patients more agency in a system that has historically failed them.

Also on our radar: The launch comes as investment in women's health gains momentum, with new venture funds emerging to back startups in the space. Meanwhile, major medical bodies are also rethinking their approach, with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently issuing new prenatal care guidance. The issue is also getting attention from lawmakers, with states like Alabama introducing legislation to improve postpartum depression screening.
