Getting tested is a normal, responsible part of looking after your health, and there is nothing to feel awkward about. A little prep helps you get the right tests and understand what the results mean. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a screening that gives you clear answers

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Note any symptoms and when they started, like discharge, sores, itching, or pain, though many infections have no symptoms at all. Note the date of any possible exposure, since some tests are only accurate after a window of time.

Think about which tests you may want, and be ready to talk openly about recent partners and protection used, which helps your provider recommend the right panel. List your current medications and any allergies.

Bring these questions

  • Which infections am I being tested for, and are there others I should ask about?
  • Is it too soon after a possible exposure for results to be reliable?
  • When and how will I get my results?
  • If a result is positive, what are the treatment and partner-notification steps?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Depending on the tests, screening may involve a urine sample, a blood draw, or a swab. It is quick and routine. Share your notes early so the panel fits your situation and your questions are answered.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

Note when to expect results and how you will get them. If a result is positive, most STIs are treatable or manageable, and your provider will walk you through the next steps, including letting recent partners know.

If you develop new or worsening symptoms, or you have a known exposure, contact your provider rather than waiting for routine results. Keep a note of when you were last tested for next time.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps your screening history, symptoms, and questions in one private place, so every appointment starts from a clear picture and results are easy to track. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. When you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
