A first counseling appointment works best when you can name what you want to work on. A little reflection beforehand helps you use the time well, especially if talking about it is hard.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a counseling visit that gets you support

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Jot down what has been weighing on you lately, when it started, and how it affects your sleep, work, and relationships. Note any patterns you have noticed, and what you hope to feel or do differently.

List anything already helping or not helping, including medications, past counseling, and support from people around you. Bring your goals for the sessions, even rough ones.

Bring these questions

  • What approach do you think fits what I am dealing with?
  • How many sessions might we plan for, and how will we track progress?
  • What can I do between sessions?
  • What should I do if things feel worse before they feel better?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Your counselor will ask about your history and what brought you in. Sharing your notes early helps you get past the basics and into the work, even in a first session.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After each session, note what resonated and anything you agreed to try. A short record makes the next session easier to pick up and shows change over time.

If a medication or plan is not sitting right, or your mood drops sharply, reach out before the next appointment rather than waiting. If you ever feel unsafe, contact emergency services or a crisis line.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps your notes, history, and questions in one private place, so each session starts where the last one left off. Privacy matters here, and your record stays yours. When you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
