A semen analysis checks the count, movement, and shape of sperm, and it is one of the first steps in a fertility workup. How you prepare affects the result, so a little planning matters. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.
Ask how many days to abstain from ejaculation beforehand, since a specific window is usually advised for an accurate result. Note any recent fever or illness, which can affect a sample, and check whether to produce the sample at the clinic or bring it in within a set time.
Write down any medications, supplements, and relevant history, such as past infections, surgeries, or injuries. Note anything you want to ask, and whether a repeat test may be needed to confirm the picture.
You will provide a sample privately, either at the clinic or brought in within the time given. It is a routine test for the lab, and staff handle it discreetly. Confirm timing and labeling so the result is not affected.

Note your results and what your provider said they mean. Because a single sample can vary, a repeat test is common, so keep the reports together to compare over time.
If a repeat is advised, book it for the window your provider suggests. Bring your earlier result so the two can be read side by side.
