A mammogram is quick, and a little prep makes it easier and the results clearer. Knowing your history and what to ask helps you handle whatever the results say.
Note the date of your last mammogram and where it was done, so images can be compared. Track any breast changes you have noticed, like a lump, thickening, skin change, or discharge, and where.
Skip deodorant, lotion, or powder on the day, since they can show up on the images. Mention any family history of breast or ovarian cancer, and ask to schedule for the week after your period if screening feels tender.
The technologist will position each breast and take images, with a few seconds of firm pressure each time. It is brief, and telling them about any tender areas helps.
Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.
Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)
Many results come back normal, and a callback often just means a clearer image is needed, not that something is wrong. Note the date you should expect results and who to contact if you do not hear.
If you are asked to come back or notice a new breast change before your next screening, do not wait. Book the follow-up and bring your notes and prior imaging details.
myStoria keeps your imaging history, breast changes, and questions in one place, so every appointment starts prepared and results are easy to track. When you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
This page offers general information to help you prepare for and follow up on your mammogram. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you notice a new lump or breast change, contact your provider rather than waiting for your next screening. myStoria video consults are scheduled in advance.
