On August 19, 2026, Merck and Moderna announced that a personalized mRNA therapy, paired with an immunotherapy already used for melanoma, kept people cancer-free longer than that immunotherapy on its own. Coverage is calling it the first Phase 3 win for an mRNA cancer treatment.
The win is real. What's public is a topline press release, not a published study, and the therapy isn't approved or available anywhere yet.
The trial, INTerpath-001, enrolled 1,137 people whose melanoma had been surgically removed but who were still at high risk of it coming back (stage IIB through IV). Everyone had their tumour removed first. Then they were split into two groups: the mRNA therapy plus Keytruda, or Keytruda on its own.
Keytruda (pembrolizumab) is an immunotherapy already used as standard care after melanoma surgery. So this wasn't the new therapy against nothing. It was the therapy added to good existing care, tested against that care alone.
