Chest pain has many possible causes, from the heart to the lungs, muscles, or digestion, so a clear account of how it feels and when it happens helps your doctor sort it out. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a visit that gets you answers

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Track where the pain is, what it feels like, whether it is sharp, dull, or tight, and how long it lasts. Note what you were doing when it started and whether it eases with rest or changes with breathing or movement.

Write down anything that comes with it, like shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to your arm, jaw, or back. List your current medications and any history of heart, lung, or digestive conditions.

Bring these questions

  • What is most likely causing my chest pain?
  • Do I need tests, like an ECG, blood work, or a scan?
  • What symptoms mean I should seek emergency care?
  • What can I do to manage this in the meantime?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your doctor to ask about the pattern, check your heart and lungs, and possibly order an ECG or blood tests. Lead with your notes so the visit focuses on finding a cause.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After the visit, track when the pain happens and whether the plan is helping, along with any test results. A clear record shows whether things are improving or changing.

If you have chest pain that is severe, spreads to your arm, jaw, or back, or comes with sweating, nausea, or shortness of breath, call your local emergency number right away. Do not wait.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps how the pain feels, when it happens, and your relevant history in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear pattern rather than a single episode. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
