Trouble swallowing can come from your throat, your food pipe, or the muscles involved, so a clear account of what it feels like helps your doctor find the cause. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a visit that gets you answers

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Track when swallowing is hard, whether with solids, liquids, or both, and where food seems to stick. Note whether it is getting worse, whether you cough or choke, and whether it comes with pain.

Write down when it started and anything with it, like heartburn, weight loss, or a hoarse voice. List your current medications and any history of reflux or throat conditions.

Bring these questions

  • What could be causing my trouble swallowing?
  • Do I need any tests, like a scope or a swallow study?
  • Could this be linked to reflux or another condition?
  • What foods or textures are safest for now?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your doctor to ask about the pattern, examine your throat and neck, and likely arrange tests. Lead with your notes so the visit focuses on finding a cause.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After the visit, track whether swallowing improves on the plan you were given, along with any results. A clear record shows whether things are changing.

If food or a pill becomes stuck, you cannot swallow your own saliva, or you have trouble breathing, seek urgent care right away.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps what swallowing feels like, what comes with it, and your relevant history in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear picture rather than a rough guess. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
