There are more birth control options than ever, and the right one depends on your health, your routine, and your plans. A little prep helps you and your provider find a good fit faster. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a method that works for you

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Note what you are looking for, like preventing pregnancy, lighter periods, or managing symptoms, and whether you might want to conceive in the next year or two. Track your cycle and any past experience with birth control, including what you liked or did not.

List your current medications, and any history of blood clots, migraines, or high blood pressure, and whether you smoke, since these affect which options are safe for you. Write down your questions so nothing gets missed.

Bring these questions

  • Which options fit my health history and lifestyle?
  • What are the common side effects, and how long until they settle?
  • How well does each option prevent pregnancy in real use?
  • How soon can I get pregnant after stopping, if I want to?
  • What should I do if I miss a dose or want to switch?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your provider to review your health history and blood pressure and talk through the options with you. Share your notes early so the conversation centers on what matters to you, not just filling in a form.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

Give a new method a few cycles to settle, and keep a short note on any side effects, bleeding changes, or mood shifts. Small changes are common at first and often ease with time.

If side effects are hard to live with, or the method is not fitting your life, book a follow-up to adjust rather than stopping on your own. Bring your notes so the next choice is better informed.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps your cycle history, medications, and questions in one private place, so your visit starts from a clear picture and nothing gets forgotten. Everything stays with you between visits, so adjusting your method later is easy. When you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
