A fever is your body responding to something, and the details around it, how high, how long, and what else is going on, help your doctor find the cause. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a visit that gets to the cause

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Track your temperature and when you take it, how high it has gone, and how many days it has lasted. Note anything with it, like chills, a cough, sore throat, rash, pain, or vomiting.

Write down when it started, anything that brings it down, and any recent travel or contact with someone who was ill. List your current medications, allergies, and any ongoing conditions.

Bring these questions

  • What is most likely causing my fever?
  • Do I need any tests to find the cause?
  • How should I manage the fever at home?
  • What symptoms mean I should seek urgent care?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your doctor to check your temperature and vital signs, look for a source of infection, and possibly order tests. Share your notes early so the visit lands on a clear next step.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After the visit, keep tracking your temperature and symptoms and note whether the plan is helping. A clear record shows whether the fever is settling or getting worse.

If you have a very high fever, a fever with a stiff neck, confusion, a rash that does not fade under pressure, trouble breathing, or a fever in a very young infant, seek urgent care right away.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps your temperature readings, symptoms, and relevant history in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear timeline rather than memory. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
