Independent fertility genetic counselling, finally on your side. Meet DNAide: A myStoria partner for PGT results, carrier screening, and more.
Genetic carrier screening is a blood or saliva test that shows whether you or your partner carry genes for certain inherited conditions. It helps you understand the chances of passing a condition on and plan ahead. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.
Gather what you know of your family health history on both sides, including any inherited conditions or ethnic background a provider may ask about. Note whether one or both partners are being tested.
Write down what you want to understand from the results and how they might shape your decisions. List any past genetic testing either partner has had, so it is not repeated needlessly.
The sample itself is simple, a blood draw or saliva. Most of the value is in the conversation, so use the time to ask what the screen covers and how results will be explained to you both.
Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.
Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)
When results arrive, review them together and note what your provider or a genetic counselor says they mean. Keep them on record, since they stay relevant for future planning.
If a result needs discussion, book time with your provider or a genetic counselor rather than reading it alone. Bring both partners' results so they can be read together.
myStoria keeps both partners' results, family history, and questions in one private place, so your appointment starts from a clear picture and results stay easy to find later. Everything stays with you between visits, so each step builds on the last. When you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
This page offers general information to help you prepare for and follow up on your genetic carrier screening. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For personal guidance about results, speak with your provider or a genetic counselor. myStoria video consults are scheduled in advance.
