Ear pain has several possible causes, and the details you bring help your doctor find the right one quickly. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to an ear pain visit that gets you answers

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Track which ear hurts, how long it has hurt, and how the pain feels, whether sharp, dull, or throbbing. Note anything with it, like fever, drainage, reduced hearing, ringing, or dizziness.

Write down anything that eases or worsens it, and what you have tried so far. List your current medications, allergies, and any recent cold, water exposure, or air travel.

Bring these questions

  • What is likely causing the pain?
  • Do I need antibiotics, or will they not help?
  • How can I ease the pain safely in the meantime?
  • What signs mean I should seek care urgently?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your doctor to look inside the ear, check your hearing if needed, and ask about recent illness. Lead with your notes so the visit moves quickly to a clear answer.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After the visit, track whether the pain eases on the plan you were given, and note any change in hearing or new drainage.

If the pain worsens, you notice sudden hearing loss, or you have a high fever or swelling behind the ear, seek care rather than waiting. Otherwise, book a follow-up with your notes ready.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps which ear hurts, how long, and what comes with it in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear picture instead of a vague memory. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
