Jaw pain can come from the joint, your teeth, clenching, or muscle tension, so a clear account of when it hurts and what makes it worse helps your doctor find the cause. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.
Track where the jaw hurts, when it started, and whether it clicks, locks, or is worse with chewing or talking. Note whether you clench or grind your teeth, especially at night, and whether the pain spreads to your ear or head.
Write down anything that eases or worsens it, like soft foods or stress. List your current medications and any history of dental work, injury, or teeth grinding.
Expect your doctor to feel and move your jaw, ask about the pattern, and check your teeth and bite or refer you to a dentist. Lead with your notes so the visit focuses on finding a cause.
Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.
Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)
After the visit, track whether the pain eases on the plan you were given, and note what makes it flare. A clear record shows whether things are improving.
If jaw pain comes on with chest pain, breathlessness, or sweating, treat it as an emergency and call your local emergency number, since jaw pain can be a sign of a heart problem.
myStoria keeps when the jaw hurts, what makes it worse, and your relevant history in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear picture rather than a rough guess. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
