Trouble sleeping has many possible causes, from stress to habits to health conditions, so a clear account of your nights helps your doctor find the thread. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a sleep visit that gets you rest

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Track how long you have slept poorly, whether the trouble is falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking early, and how it affects your days. Note your bedtime, wake time, and how often you wake in the night.

Write down your evening routine, screen and caffeine habits, and anything you have tried. List your current medications and supplements, since some affect sleep.

Bring these questions

  • What could be behind my sleep trouble?
  • Could my habits or medications be a factor?
  • Which changes should I try first?
  • Do I need any tests, like a sleep study?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your doctor to ask about your routine, mood, and other symptoms, and to look for causes. Lead with your notes so the visit focuses on a plan rather than fact-finding.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After the visit, keep a short daily note on your sleep and how the plan is going. Patterns over a couple of weeks are more useful than a single night.

If poor sleep comes with low mood, loud snoring with gasping, or you fall asleep during the day in risky moments, mention it promptly. Otherwise, book a follow-up with your sleep notes in hand.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps your sleep pattern, evening habits, and what you have tried in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear picture rather than a rough recollection. It holds your history between visits, so each one builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
