Starting IVF is a huge, brave step—and it’s natural to hope for everything to go smoothly. But the truth is, sometimes cycles don’t go as planned.
Cycle cancellations or complications can happen more often than people realize, and while it can feel discouraging, knowing the why can help ease some of the shock and sadness.
Here are a few reasons an IVF cycle might be delayed, canceled, or not progress the way we hope:
🔹 Poor Ovarian Response
The ovaries don’t respond well to the meds, and not enough mature follicles develop. This can mean fewer eggs—or sometimes none—available for retrieval.
🔹 Ovarian Cysts
Cysts can show up during pre-treatment checks and sometimes need to be resolved before moving forward with IVF.
🔹 Overstimulation (OHSS Risk)
Too many follicles growing too fast can lead to a condition called OHSS, which can be serious. If that risk is high, your doctor may recommend pausing the cycle to keep you safe.
