A sprained ankle is common, but a clear account of how it happened and how it feels helps your doctor tell a simple sprain from something that needs more, like a fracture. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a visit that gets you moving again

01
Before your visit

Prepare

Track how the injury happened, where it hurts, and how much you can put weight on it. Note any swelling, bruising, or instability, and whether it is improving day by day.

Write down what you have done so far, like rest, ice, or a brace, and how much it helped. List your current medications and any history of ankle injuries.

Bring these questions

  • Is this a sprain, or could a bone be broken?
  • Do I need an X-ray?
  • How much weight should I put on it, and when?
  • What can I do to help it heal and prevent it happening again?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your doctor to examine and move your ankle, check where it hurts, and order an X-ray if a fracture is possible. Lead with your notes so the visit focuses on a clear plan.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

After the visit, track your pain, swelling, and what you can do, and stick with any exercises for the time your doctor suggested. Steady progress is the goal.

If you cannot put any weight on the ankle, it looks out of shape, or it is numb or cold, seek care rather than waiting.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps how the injury happened, your pain and swelling, and what you have tried in one place, so your appointment starts from a clear picture rather than a rough memory. Everything stays with you between visits, so a follow-up builds on the last. And when you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
