GLP-1s: The Good, the Bad, and What We Still Don't Know

At this point, everyone’s heard of a GLP-1. But, you’ve probably heard a lot less about what it actually does, what it asks of your body, and where the science still doesn't have a clear answer.

So here's the fuller picture, the good and the not-so-good, laid out plainly so you can think it through for yourself and bring better questions to your provider.

What they actually are

You've likely heard the brand names more than the drug names. Brand  names Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide(generic name). Brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound are both tirzepatide (generic name). Brand names Saxenda and Victoza are liraglutide (generic name). Ozempic and Mounjaro are approved for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy and Zepbound for weight management. Same active ingredients, different names and approvals.

What they share: they copy a gut hormone your body releases after eating. They help you feel full sooner, stay full longer, and they slow how fast your stomach empties. Tirzepatide also acts on a second hormone signal called GIP, which is part of why it tends to drive more weight loss.

That one detail, the slowed stomach emptying, explains a lot of what comes up later: the nausea, the surgery precautions, and why your birth control might not work the way you expect.
