Pregnancy comes with more information than anyone can absorb in one sitting, most of it generic, most of it landing at the wrong time. SmartParent fixes the timing problem. It's three texts a week, matched to your exact week of pregnancy or your baby's age, built by the people whose job is getting pregnancy and infant care right.
What SmartParent is
SmartParent is a free text-message program covering pregnancy through your baby's first year, built by researchers at the University of British Columbia. It merges what used to be two separate programs, SmartMom and SmartParent, into one continuous experience.
You get three texts a week, each linking to a resource, timed to your stage. It runs entirely through your phone's messages, so there's nothing separate to set up. When a message doesn't apply to you, you skip it.
The content is developed with input from nurses, midwives, physicians, and researchers, and it's endorsed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC). It's built for people with uncomplicated pregnancies and healthy infants, and every message is designed to sit alongside your care team. A national randomized controlled trial evaluating its effect on pregnancy knowledge and health behaviours is underway through UBC, and results haven't published yet. We'll follow that research as it comes out.
Where it's available right now
SmartParent runs in four places: British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and two regions in Ontario, Halton Region and Peel Region. There's no US version.
