A male fertility workup looks at the factors on the male side that can affect conception, usually starting with a health history and a semen analysis. It is a common, routine part of the picture. Here is what to prepare, what to ask, and how to follow up.

— Your appointment, start to finish

Three steps to a workup that moves things forward

01
Before your visit

Prepare

If a semen analysis is planned, ask about the abstinence window beforehand, since it affects the result. Note any relevant history, such as past illnesses, surgeries, injuries, or medications that could play a role.

Track lifestyle factors your provider may ask about, and list your current medications and supplements. Gather any past test results, and bring your partner's history if you are being seen together.

Bring these questions

  • What does the workup check, and which tests come first?
  • How should I prepare for a semen analysis?
  • What do the results mean, and might they change over time?
  • Are there factors I can change that could help?
  • What are the next steps, including any referrals?
02
During your visit

Make the time count

Expect your provider to take a history, possibly examine you, and explain which tests they recommend. Lead with your notes and questions so the visit covers what matters most to you.

Take notes as the doctor talks, record the meeting (with their permission!) in myStoria, or add a quick voice note to myStoria as soon as possible afterward so that you are not relying on memory alone.

Before you leave the clinic, ask for copies of anything from the visit, like lab results, assessments, or referrals, and upload them to myStoria to keep your history complete. (If you aren't able to get copies, connect with Concierge and we can help you source them!)

03
After your visit

Follow up

Note any tests or referrals your provider ordered and book them promptly. Some results can vary between samples, so a repeat test is sometimes part of the plan rather than a setback.

Once results are in, book a follow-up to talk through what they mean for you both and agree on next steps. Bring your notes so the conversation picks up where this one left off.

How myStoria helps

Every appointment starts prepared

myStoria keeps your history, results, and questions in one private place, so each appointment starts from a clear picture and nothing gets forgotten. It also holds both partners' details together, so your workup reads as one story rather than two. When you want to talk something through, you can schedule a video consult in advance with a member of our team, several of whom are nurses.
